MANIAC
NETFLIX
Maniac takes place in a retro, dystopian fantasy. Two strangers, played by Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, are used in a Japanese experimental lab, where they undergo therapy through unconscious hallucinations. The computer animations suggest that the lab has gained consciousness (or maybe the technicians are hallucinating). A playful tone had already been developed through the script and the production design, which gave us the liberty to just play and help discover this maniacal world.
Research was a big part of this process. We looked at early operating systems from the 70s and 80s, and the animations and menus from early video games. Everything was funneled into a tricked out Flash file, so the onset playback operators were able to interact and trigger different animation at will.
